Shadow of Greed

History

On January 12, 2010, I started a game with one purpose in mind: Make something playable. From this, Shadow of Greed was born. It's a kind of Star Wars Battlefront inspired game which puts the player in the shoes of a soldier on the frontlines. The goal was to immerse people in what seemed like a real battle between two armies. While it didn't really complete that goal, it did provide a not too bad experience. A small blog was started at http://shadowofgreed.wordpress.com/.

I originally began creating the game in my own custom engine, as you can see from the screen shots below. The engine used Ogre3D and was written in C++, with a lot of focus on using Lua scripts in game logic. It was meant to be an initiative to create a generic 3D game engine that I nicknamed the Pyramid 3D Engine.

Eventually though, I switched to UDK (Unreal Development Kit) because development was slow, and I was not meeting my goals. At this point, the game turned into more of a mod than a full game, because I decided to focus on maps and game play, and just use already created characters, weapons, and vehicles.

On January 26, 2010, I released a 3-map beta. It was buggy, but definitely playable. This became the "final version" of the game. I learned a lot from the comments given by my friends about game play, and map flow,. So with out further ado, here it is:

The Beta

Download the Beta here: http://www.mediafire.com/?yzz1nxy2ny2

The Beta has 3 maps:

Island

-Location: Small Island Chain

-The first map created

-Very even playing field

- Good for vehicles

-Inspired by Battlefront map Kashyyk Islands

Finite Horizon

-Location: Floating platform

-Second map

-Perfectly symmetrical

-Lots of Vehicles

-Inspired by Battlefront map Bespin Platforms

Ruins

-Locations: Ruins on a mountaintop

-Graphically, the best

-Slight bias towards Red Team (More cover opportunities)

-Inspired by Battlefront map Rhen Var Citadel
